Entry Rules are Changing for Canada
What is an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)?
eTA is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. The authorization is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Who needs an Electronic Travel Authorization?
Citizens from countries other than the United States (U.S.) who do not need a visa to enter Canada will need to obtain an eTA before flying to Canada. To view the list of countries, please visit Canada.ca/eTA. Travellers do not need an eTA when entering Canada by land or sea.
When eTA becomes mandatory on March 15, 2016:
• Canadian permanent residents will not need an eTA to fly to Canada, but as is currently required, they will need to travel with their permanent resident card of Canada. Otherwise, they may not be able to board their flight to Canada.
• U.S. permanent residents will need an eTA to fly to Canada (as well as their U.S. Green Card). They will not need an eTA if entering Canada by land or sea.
• Students and temporary workers from eTA-required countries who received their student or work permit before August 1, 2015, and intend to travel from and return to Canada by air will need an eTA..
When will travellers need an eTA to enter Canada?
This new entry requirement is not mandatory until March 15, 2016. However, beginning on August 1, 2015, eligible travellers will have the opportunity to go online and apply for their eTA ahead of time.
How do I apply for an eTA for travel to Canada?
Applying for an eTA is a simple online process that takes just a few minutes. You will need your passport, a credit card, and email address. It costs $7 CAD to get an eTA. It will be valid for up to five years. The application form is available on Canada.ca/eTA.
What if I arrive at the airport without an eTA when it becomes mandatory? How will I be able to get an eTA at the last minute?
Last-minute applications can be made on any device with an internet connection, including mobile phones. Applying for an eTA is a simple online process. Most applicants can expect to get an email response within minutes of applying. You should get your eTA as soon as you begin to plan your trip to visit Canada.
Do I have to print anything to prove that I have an eTA? No. An eTA is electronically linked to your passport. You will need to travel with the passport you used to apply for your eTA
